What to consider when choosing a tumble dryer
Washing clothes is something households all around the world do every week, if not every few days. Many family households will have large loads of washing that need washing, cleaning and then drying to be folded and stored away. Drying clothes usually means pegging them out on a washing line but many homes and flats do not have a garden or space for a washing line, making drying wet clothes a problem.
Many homes will buy tumble dryers as they can speed up drying times and make clothes soft and fluffy. Tumble dryers are preferred over spin dryers if you have the space as they get rid of most of the creases left in clothes from spin drying too.
Tumble dryers tend to need a lot of space which can be a problem with some smaller homes or flats. The tumble dryer will normally be relegated from the kitchen to a side utility room of the garage. Some people even stack their dryer on top of their washing machine to conserve space.
There are dryers that can be stored under worktops and inside cupboards but you’ll need to be careful to remember to measure the dryer before buying unless you want to get home to find the dryer won’t fit.
One important aspect of buying a dryer you’ll need to consider is what kind of dryer you want: A vented or condenser dryer. A vented dryer takes the moist air away from your clothes through a plastic tube that will typically go out a window or have a permanent vent on the outside of your home. Vented spin dryers use less energy and so can be the cheaper to run option that would be appealing for many energy saving customers.
The other variety, the condenser, uses a condensing unit to take the moistness out of the air in the dryer meaning you will not have to have a hose dangling out of a window or have to do any major work to fit a vent. This extra unit means that it will use extra energy that could cost more in the long run.
Tumble dryers have a greater sized drum than washing machines making them more efficient as they can dry clothes faster with much more airflow between the wet clothes. For delicate items of clothing there are models that have variable heat and duration settings so that you do not damage your clothes.
